Just a bit depressed.

It doesn't happen often anymore but last Wednesday morning I had a turn feeling bad. Afterwards I discovered it was my own fault. No energy, gloomy and just a feeling I don't like this world. We went to sleep late after a good movie. It had rained all night, the air in the morning was more than gray and it was oppressively hot. Was this maybe the source? Not really…

Do not ask me why, but the last few days I look at the Dutch News website "nu.nl". And the stupid thing is that, until now, I kept doing that.

Following it, I discovered again onward there is a lot going on in the world. And most negative things get media attention. The ongoing hassle / nagging about that virus, demonstrations against everything, the situation in America, Brazil, and yesterday to top it all off the discovery by the Dutch police of prison cells and even a torture chamber prepared by criminals in soundproofed shipping containers in the so-called 'peaceful' Dutch Brabantse Wouse Tol. In one word all disgusting.

Incidentally, also a positive message. Gas and electricity prices have never been as low as now as the headline told.  With the prices here, I laugh about that. But OK. Happy for people living there. However, it turned out to be a sponsored advertising that is published between the "latest news". Smart but actually also disgusting.

And that torture chamber, to top it off with all negativity, came across to me as a kind of horror movie. But no, it is real. And that in the 'peaceful' Netherlands. Too sad for words.

What a world we live in?

And all those thoughts kept running through my mind. Certainly, I am not the only one affected by that continuous negative reporting.

As usual I went out for a walk with the dog again. The rain showers had just stopped. And, unexpectedly, I was facing this beautiful yellow rose ...

How beautiful the world is and what a lot it has to offer. It depends on how and from which side you look at it. And that negativity has always been there and in all ages. The point is that, with the current techniques, we have those bins with mud dumped over us much more quickly and about everything going on in this world.

For me it is not a kind of putting my head in the sand but more a form of self-preservation. What should I do with it? And above all, can I change it?

Yes, I can and that rose told me again.

It is much better to be positive in life and radiate that positivity to the outside world. And with more people who want to make that choice, that is certainly not a drop in the ocean.

So, I stopped following that website again. In the afternoon I already felt much better.

Cultural differences in a relationship

I live in Thailand for more than eight years now and for several years have a Thai partner. And that is indeed different from what I was used to. That has a lot to do with our cultural differences. Someone recently asked me about it.

Of course, in a relationship with someone from your own culture and environment you also have to deal with differences. Not more than normal. Different backgrounds in, for example, youth, living environment, family, education, interests, religion, work, etcetera.

According to many, age difference would also play a role. Eighteen and thirty eight? There is something to be said as we are also said and thought with forty-three and sixty-three, although it is slightly less than the earlier age. And at ninety and a hundred and ten no one "falls" on that age difference anymore.

There are also the same differences with someone from a really different culture. And yet there is quite a bit more to be aware of and to deal with.

To mention a few.

Communication:

Communication is about more than just language, of course. In addition to verbal and non-verbal language use, there is also a language concept. And that language understanding of expressions and beliefs is rooted in a culture.

A difference in mother tongue and especially in understanding the language regularly causes surprise, misunderstandings and certainly also a lot of fun. You think you understand each other, but nothing is further from the truth, as appears regularly after a shorter or longer period of time.

I have now tried several times to master the Thai language. I just stopped and stick to the small basic things in the language. I didn't have and don't have a language talent and I actually find it pretty useless. Where we are currently building, for example, a special dialect is spoken again. And even though I could speak the language I never get that understanding.

We use English as an intermediate language. Not that that solves all the differences, but in our opinion, it is the best option.

Family:

In Thailand, family is of the highest level. And I mean the nest in which you were born. Your father, mother, brothers and sisters. Crazy to say but your own family is lower ranking.

Certainly, in the countryside, everyone lives next to or close to each other and everyone takes care of everyone until the last breath. A support on all fronts. (Grand) parents take care of (grand) children. And (grand) children for their parents. You hardly see any elderly centers and nursing homes here. Children are often your pension in a literal sense.

In Western culture, this bond and that form of health care system are different. Much more individuality plays a role at some point and we have bought everything with all our regulations and insurances under the excuse of not wanting or having to be "bothering" anyone getting older and to be able to deal with yourself until the end.

“I” in relation to “We”:

The world revolves around "I". Something that is being spoon-fed in the west. You propose something, the world revolves around you, go for your talents and for what you are unique in. Be different and show yourself.

This is really different in the culture in which I live. It's about "us". That family again. And above all not to stand out too much or be an outsider. The group counts.

Respect and leadership:

Where in the west we go for teams as much as possible for "everyone is the same" and opt for leadership from the group and with voice, that is different in Thailand.

The easiest way to understand this is to imagine the Western form of leadership and respect as horizontal. The Thai, on the other hand, is vertical.

Here in Thailand there is a kind of ranking system. The worker / rice farmer is at the bottom of the ladder. Buddha together with the king on the highest sport. Your background and position in society literally determine your status and prestige in that system. And anyone who is lower than you on the same ladder has respect for everything above him or her. No contradiction but acceptance. Participation/voice is often hard to find. The manager decides because he or she is the manager.

In our western eyes that seems a bit strange. For example, staff that sometimes seems almost slavish to follow with, in our view, many missed opportunities for growth and development because they keep their mouth shut. Here it is a system that is used to.

Age and gender also determine respect. You undoubtedly respect someone older. After all, he or she is above you in life years. And that applies across the board. Children to parents but also random with everyone you meet. And yes, it is still here, a man is ranked above a woman. The eldest son in a family almost always deserves respect from the other brothers and sisters and often from the mother if the father should have died. The eldest son is automatically the advisor to the family at that time.

Incidentally, it is nice to see that respect in the "Wai" (the Thai greeting). The higher that Wai is made, the more the respect.

Organized versus disorganized:

In the Western world, almost everything is organized and planned. That is really different in Asia. It comes as it comes and goes as it goes, it seems sometimes.

I can assure you that it took a lot of getting used to in the first few years. You have to adapt to this system, especially waiting for your turn and waiting for something to be or can be completed. In the beginning that is to drive you crazy and you also get used to that in Western eyes disorganized way of working.

It will all work out in the end and the strange thing is that this disorganization sometimes has quite something amazing in a positive way. The disorganization ultimately resembles some sort of organization that you as a Westerner ultimately cannot grasp.

Religion versus way of life:

Buddhism is not a religion. There is no God in it at all. Buddha was and is a teacher who looks at life from surprising and often simplest angles. In his teaching there are no miracles, but often philosophies based on experiences and insights. Everyone can understand it and it is in many ways extremely detailed.

The basis is that life is about doing good things.

Christianity, for example, the group with which I feel at home, is based 543 years after Buddhism on the same principle of doing good things. However, in Christianity God plays the main role.

In my eyes and from my personal experience, it is people who have often made a mess with their interpretation. Maybe that's what people are for.

In my opinion, the basis of both, and in fact of every belief, is good, provided you realize that this belief is only part of the total truth.

In our relationship, there is respect for both approaches because they are actually about the same thing. We therefore visit the temples and also the churches many times together.

The official era:

It takes some getting used to, but, as mentioned above, the official era in Thailand is different from that in the west. Official documents and, for example, a road tax form affixed to every car, motorcycle or scooter, indicate the Buddhist year. And yes, that is the Western calendar plus that again 543 years. So, we live here right now in the year 2563. And it feels great to be over five hundred years older here. I still look vital for six hundred and six to put it that way 😉.

Eating habits and patterns:

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, yes they come in both cultures. But still. In Thailand you eat, if you want, just when you are hungry. Yes, day and night, and certainly in the cities, on every street corner and even in between. And the basis of that food is of course rice. Although bread is also reluctant to make its appearance

When I say rice, I mean lots of different types. There are so many varieties and it is a pleasure to try them out.

In addition, vegetables and herbs. Too coast and to be found everywhere. In the countryside you walk outside to pick it fresh. When we walk in the woods with the dog, nothing ever passes or I am not told that you can eat the leaves, roots or whatever of a plant, bush or tree, how it tastes and how you need to prepare. Nature has also traditionally provided many "medicines" (homeopathy) for free and ... they work.

And yet… I regularly miss my potato.

Our rice pan provides the solution, as you can see in the photo.

If you go to a restaurant, which we often do, you asked the left overs of your order to be packed up to take home. No more than usual here.

Bare feet and slipper culture:

Something that I really appreciate here is the fact that people here are used to leaving their shoes outside when entering someone. And because putting on and taking off shoes can be a chore, most people here wear slippers.

For me walking barefoot is a relief and also recommended for the west.

Intimacy:

Kissing each other in public or walking hand in hand on the street is something you don't see very often in Thailand. Although, fair is fair, things are about to change. And luckily we walk hand in hand on the street or in a shopping center.

Stress and excitement:

I wrote it before. Everything will be fine and needs time. Take it easy. Getting excited about whether, however well-intentioned, you want to change something by Western standards is practically pointless.

Don't worry and just wait (yes, it takes training to accept that more and more).

The advantage is that I have been living an almost stress-free life here for more than eight years now.

And there is more to mention.

It remains a constantly challenging quest with many beautiful discoveries.

Is it all better or worse?

It is different and I still like it so far because I can compare.

By sometimes looking at these differences from a distance, I have made it clear that the Western way of culture and life is certainly not always a saving grace.

If you want to survive in a different culture, for me it is a matter of surrender and to stop comparing. Be sure you will stay alive.

To me it is sad to see that here too the internet is destroying a lot. The differences in culture are getting smaller and leaning towards the western form. Whether that will make it happier in the end is the question for me.

Well, a pretty long blog. Maybe too long, but if you are really interested in it, perhaps valuable. It was nice for me to write this down.

Permanent control and less and less freedom under the excuse of Corona. “Big brother watching you” even more...

I am not someone who believes in all kinds of conspiracy theories. It are mainly movies that show us and take us into their script to believe in it for a while.

Last week I heard stories from different sides that made me aware that this phenomenon maybe is still going on at the moment. Deprivation of liberty under the excuse of fighting viruses. I even thought about the risks it could entail to write about this.

For months we have been stuck with sometimes the most insane and more than creative "security measures" that have been invented in relation to a virus that seems to be gripping the world.
We have to keep ‘social’ distance and register almost everywhere or scan a QR code to be able to enter a place. We are even monitored with drones.
The reason, we are told, is that if a new case of contamination occurs, the source can be quickly traced to avoid even more misery. But is that really the story?

It seems to me more and more sham. That basic source even, A market in Wuhan (China) is told, turned out to have been brought into the world with wrong photos and videos from Langowan (Indonesia) and appears to have nothing to do with bats.
Everything is, by the way, still based on instilling fear.
It seems to be a form of James Bond screenplay that has not yet been made into a movie. A fair that is simply tested in practice.

I now hear stories about companies that conveniently use the virus situation to reorganize "cheaply". Read to get rid of staff. Maybe smart but not very neat.
Companies, institutions, and more, that were not "strong" enough are now bankrupt or dead. It looks like a gigantic clean-up operation taking place. No, not nice to express it this way, but unfortunately, I can't see it any other way. Gigantic side effects and damages have been done with much, much greater damage than by the spread virus itself, which is hardly discussed.
So far not really something that reminds me of a form of conspiracy theory.

More than a month ago, 75 years of freedom was commemorated in the country of my origin, the Netherlands, after all the misery of the Second World War. A great initiative that still touches me year after year. When I look back on that word freedom, I increasingly wonder how our freedom is developing. It’s getting less and less. And here comes my sense of that virus floating up as a smoke screen for something much bigger underneath going on.

Although a compulsory chip has not yet been inplanted in all of us, we have been fully traceable with our mobiles everywhere. We yearn for the latest technology in order to be able to remain part of society without even worrying about the limitations of freedom that the same technology entails. The Wuhan virus has put a lot of speed in keeping a close eye on every step we take, mapping it and making the most of it.

I heard a story from a woman who went shopping in the Netherlands and once went to browse a shop where they sold perfumes. The display of a specific brand attracted her. She stood there a little longer but she didn't buy anything. When she got home, unasked and unexpected, she immediately got marketing of this brand on her mobile. Still very coincidental.

It is known that in shopping streets and in shops nowadays you can be (are) followed completely. More and more people are starting to find out that their privacy is at stake and leave their mobile at home, I was told. I have been quite right for years. Why should your purchasing behavior be charted? Indeed, to gain insight into your preferences and desires and to be able to sell to you even more on that basis.

And think… is that only on shopping streets? It has been the case everywhere for years and the network is closing ever further. Privacy law? I wrote about it before. Do not make me laugh.

We are now trapped in the World Wide Web and are simply testified in it. And the pole, of course, unfortunately goes many times further than "just" that buying and selling process. It gets a bit scary when you think about it a little deeper. And this process continues step by step.
The net is closing more and more and our future is more and more directed for us instead of still determined by us. What about freedom?

Hearing and seeing several demonstrations, I'm glad people are waking up, and yet. This is also part of the process that is being directed for us. I think it is unfortunately already too late and it is just a matter of waiting for the scenario to continue ...
According to the latest reports, the virus appears to be mutating. Corona-20 on the way?

All a bit scary.

Being “declared alive” again.

It continues to feel a bit strange every year. Have to go to a notary, or in my case to the hospital, to have me officially declared alive. And when I have that signed piece of paper in my hands, it is always a small party that I share with my kids.

You have to let yourself be declared alive? Yes, it is necessary every year because I get a pension, live in Thailand and have been unsubscribed as Dutch citizen living in the Netherlands for years already. It is a condition for you to be able to continue to receive a pension from the pension provider. No problem, I understand that. The way in which this has to be done, although it has already been simplified for me, remains somewhat strange to me. Why not show your face with your passport via Skype for example. Nevertheless.

The joy mainly is not about another year of getting pension, but about the fact that every year (at least fortunately so far) I receive confirmation that I am ALIVE. Actually, a very conscious moment because you hardly or not think about it.

After all, it is certain for everyone that you run out of time. And making good use of that uncertain time-frame waiting for you so far has been successful for me in my experience.

A lot of people ask me how that actually works, they cannot understand it and, in my experience, they are too stuck in the system that you have to continue working until your so called retirement age.

I just couldn't work anymore and was completely burned out. Contrary to what the newspapers once claimed and the internet still claims, those tons of money mentioned I got have been left out for me. On my balcony I waited several months but it never arrived. It was a mistake made by a willing accountant. An apology note from my employer, but you will never take the numbers away again. They keep stuck to your name. And well ... I live despite all the mud that came over me long ago, because I just couldn't go any further, still at least until yesterday. And writing this I think about the comparison with a lotus flower seed. It needs mud to grow and flourish.

My attentive Head of Human Resources drew my attention to the possibilities offered by European regulations for early retirement options. And yes, government discouragement policy if you stop working earlier. My pension is being cut by 65% and I am happy with it.

To this day I have lived a good sunny and completely different life in a period of good health for more than eight years so far. Now even in the process of designing, developing and building with our own hands a small private spiritual center with pyramids in Thailand. It is a more than fantastic experience that I / we would like to continue for a few more years. And yes, getting older will certainly have flaws in health for me too. And yet I have come through this beautiful time so far in a good way.

And should the sun not rise for me tomorrow? Then I did it. Grateful and not regretting things I ever wanted to do because I do them 😉

Having to make a play of your life to forget the troubles of the past

Most people don't even realize they have made a play of their lives. They have adopted a lifestyle to forget and hide the past.

Last week I was confronted quite intensely with two life stories of people. They are sad, violent and also risky. And from my practice those stories are absolutely not isolated. Many people act their lives and don't even notice it anymore.

They show a beautiful exterior to "the" or "their" world. Continue to hide the inside and not want to touch it anymore. An ongoing and energy-consuming way to hide their grief. A way to (still) survive...

They act so well that they even think the outside world doesn't notice that something is going on with them.

The first 7 to around 12 years of your life determine your future life behavior. You get intense impressions that are related to your family situation, attention, love, culture, religion, etc .. And if you experience unpleasant things in it, something that was particularly evident in those two stories that I spoke about, then you are so smart that you develop a way (lifestyle) so that you are bothered as little as possible by them.
And that behavior determines the rest of your life. It has become your survival strategy.

In the stories I was told, for example, that was mainly aimed at closing / armoring emotions. Become a specialist in a specific field with which you cause a stir and where people go for your profession and not for you as a person. And so, I can go on and on. All of life has become a play of running away from yourself. Show you in the armor that you have fitted yourself.

What is unfortunate is that the survival mechanism that you once taught yourself during adulthood is usually no longer needed. You can leave those protective layers that often rest heavily on your shoulders at home. You can throw off that armor and show the beautiful person who is still hiding in you.

In that situation you open up to let your life mission flow and especially to be yourself. You start flourishing.

I talked about risky. The risk lies in that if at any time you can no longer play the role that you have taught yourself for whatever reason (for example, you quit your job in which you could hide). Chances are that your world will collapse because you have never learned to accept your real self. And although you do not want to confront yourself, it still happens.

Not wrong and certainly not a weakness at all to find a specialist to offer a safe and helping hand in the process of unfolding. Somebody strong enough to deal with you.
The result will be that you will finally live and find out that you have put yourself in the closet for many years for nothing…

It doesn't have to be too late to stop acting.

"Keep moving". The best way to heal yourself and to stay healthy

If we had hurt ourselves as children or if we were (physically) bothered by something, my father consistently had the remark: “Keep moving”. With his side job as a swimming instructor, we often did that in “Stoops bad” (Swimmingpool) in Overveen, near Haarlem-NL. But also, no matter how much it hurt sometimes, besides that fantastic swimming.

For several years now I am also a (Kundalini) yoga instructor and it is quite addictive. The daily combination of meditation and yoga supports me in a great way to keep me happy and healthy so far. My girlfriend as well is a bit "infected" and found her way of nearly daily exercising. And yes, true, it takes some time every day. What you get in return on the other hand is amazing.

From the end of February this year we work in Thailand on our small private spiritual pyramid house center. So far, a great experience and the retrieval of knowledge from the study of constructional engineer and architect. Blessed to be able to bring things in practice again and to work with our own hands.

That building process actually is super fun to do. Being busy with it, although a bit different, we move a lot. Judging by my waistband, it also consumes quite a bit of energy (and kilos).
My enthusiasm for building again and the moving involved brought my meditation and yoga to the background. I actually barely noticed.

Beginning April my body started to respond. I didn't notice yet the reason. I got pain in my knees during walking, in my arms, faster feeling tired, etc… Pain during the night in my legs, even having more and more trouble walking with my dog in the morning.
Until I heard my dad's voice in my head again. I had to pick up my moving, my yoga again.

I started doing my daily practice sessions (Kriyas) again and especially for my knees I made a new and extra exercise. Nothing exaggerated, meditating, calmly moving and building up the amount of movements of the exercise.

Believe it or not. In two weeks I was back on track again and I will hardly bothered by the physical disturbances that started in April. Our construction work, efforts and movements have not changed.

For me, proof that my dad's ‘Keep moving” is not only curative, but also addictive. I therefore continue with it daily to keep as long as possible happy, healthy and really connected and truly to life.

The learned patterns from which we act and which disturbs our natural behavior. "Animals don't live with ghosts or a God."

During my master's program I had to write a number of theses. One of these was “Cultural influence on risk perception”. I thought about it when my girlfriend recently remarked that animals do not live with ghosts or a God in mind and therefore will not be so concerned about it.

Thai culture, for example, is peppered with everything that concerns the (evil) spirit world, ancestors and not to forget astrology, "divination & clairvoyance". By the way, things that have nothing to do with Buddhism. This comes back in dreams and in all kinds of situations and rituals and I, too, especially living in the countryside, regularly have to deal with it.

Nothing negative about that Thai culture because the culture from which I originate knows quite a few things as well. Often with fear and frightening as a motive.
For example, a while ago I had a discussion with some Filipino friends. They have been taught in education and by the church that you have to be "God fearing". What a nonsense (to me) if God is love. You don't have to be afraid of God at all, do you? Anyway, it's just an example.
Within cultures you get spoon-fed from birth, well meant by your parents, your environment, school. church, etc., quite a few "group accepted grids".

Without thinking about it, you usually accept it and it has become your truth. Many even talk regularly, stating that people who adhere or think something else are not really good. Within faith this certainly applies to me from various experiences in my life. Actually, too sad for words.

We are all programmed in our own way and from our own background, and most believe that (only) their program is good. I call it sometimes neurotic behavior.
And I think my girlfriend is right.
Indeed regularly, if you look at it from a distance, a ballast that animals do not know.

In my opinion, Life (God, Great Spirit, Essence or whatever you want to call it) is based on and / or synonymous with Love, Growth, Progress, Development, Intensity, Beauty and so on. Pure positive energy to serve with your life for which you came here (to fulfill your life mission) and not to be hindered by what people have invented for you to be able to and continue to walk in the group pass.

And yes, we do know praying mantis and yet… I think they may not pray at all and at this point they live a bit more lighthearted and maybe more happy without fear.

And, in relation to this time, animals do not have to keep any unnatural distance, sit only with two on a table, have to wear medical or non-medical mouth caps or any other made-up measures. How blissful to live naturally ...

Great to have an empty head

Last Sunday, after my daily meditation and yoga, I thought how wonderful it is to have an empty head again. How different from years ago.

As a young boy I had that of course, but you didn't think about that at the time. Your parents offered you safety and you were pretty free to do whatever you wanted. The world was at your feet to discover and you could say almost anything you wanted. It was often laughed about.

Over the years and with the rat race called life starting, that head of mine filled up. It will be no different for most people.
Twirling and gasping nights. It was a complete waste of time.

And yes, it took a while to be in that state of emptiness again. As it came step by step, it also said goodbye step by step. Exactly eight years ago already last Wednesday.

And actually, I have not even noticed how it left. My life, no lifestyle, has changed its routine. No social media, no or very sparse following news, that daily meditation and yoga, making myself less busy (no stress, attract or excite me less about everything that happens around me), no more in large crowds, no more to have or want to be in the foreground, no watch, no deadlines, no need or want to achieve, no status, even more laughter, and so on.
It has everything to do with "cleaning" and especially now also self-protection against the overkill of information flows (no disturbance).

It feels great and I am grateful for it.

Inhale, exhale I often say to my kids and… especially don't follow the crowd. Be happy yourself and feel free.

The (un)happiness radiates from it. You don't have to get upset about that sad show of sham from others.

From Facebook and other social media, we now know that most smiling faces in photos are not spontaneous and real and all the beautiful stories most of the time not totally true. The true story and face is just before and right after the selfie for instance.

Last week I was confronted a few times with stories about people who really are most creative in showing their ‘wonderful’ lives just to try to stay track with society they want to be part of.
They have lots of debts, have tremendous financial troubles and, most funny, nearly all their friends know about these sad situations of them. And yet they continue to borrow money (from friends), try to get more credit cards, etc., just to show friends in all kinds of ways how ‘happy’ they can live. As if they don't realize at all that they can't handle money. Actually, it is too bizarre that it is possible to get even more loans and also that mainly friends still want to lend money to these types (only to keep the friendship with these ‘glitter friends’.

The people who told me those stories were quite "upset" and I think that is actually a step too far. You can be proud of yourself if you live differently and know how to deal with money and to have no debts. You can be sure this fake shows finally end up in lots of misery.

And furthermore… look at it from a distance (maybe with a smile) and say "no" after hearing those blistering stories from them to get money. And if that costs a "friendship" then you may wonder what that friendship was really worth.

Living a life without debt, something that I have inherited from home and that so far always feels great in my life. And what others do or only show... let go and laugh. It's all baked air.
