The feeling of coming home...

The last period of time a lot is going on with me. A feeling I already expected for a long time but it did not come. Slowly something begins to break free but still it is not bright. A kind of excitement in resignation. And just last Friday morning, on the birthday of my mother, a part of my furniture out of The Netherlands arrived here with a truck. This arrival opened the resignation and caused a sense of surrender. For me it has to do with a feeling of coming home.

June 2010 my (Dutch) book; "Search for personal mastery" appeared. For a time I doubted if I would also take in an attachment in it. This annex is about the search in and of my life until the time when the book arrived. I choose to keep it private and not to add the annex. Because it is in Dutch, I sometimes send it to clients out of The Netherlands if they are interested. Just a piece of background about me when they submit their brief autobiography to me.

The week before the arrival of my household I searched for this document because I remembered I wrote something in it about this coming home. Happily I found it in my dropbox. When I started reading I felt all kind of emotions. A good sign because for me it means real connection. I quote here some text about that feeling of coming home that I experienced in the year 2000 in an fantastic way. It offered me insight in that what’s going on with me now

"Asia is, without any previously conscious awareness,  in a lethal way always was already part in my blood. When I'm in Hua hin, in Viet Nam walking through the streets as a bare giant, suddenly someone called me into her house. I do not speak, write or understand Vietnamese language. For the first time I deeply experience that communication has much more to do with connection than with talk. It was not necessary for me to speak at all. Maybe not talking made the connection with the people around me even much closer.
I had to bow down to enter a small door that gave space to a room. A dark space but, after a little while because of some natural light that enters through a gap in the roof, it’s also bright and light. Several black & white family portraits hanging on the wall, against the edge of the roof.
I was invited to sit down on the ground between the family members of the house. An old woman, I presume the Lady of the House, next to me. I am HOME.

I know all this family members and I recognize all the people on the pictures. An amazing experience. I feel a giant stream of warm sincere and blissful energy. It ís family. I am very emotional, there is an atmosphere that it is accepted and totally natural. I don't have to be ashamed of it. It creates a bond.
I drink a cup of tea and walk through the house to the back yard. A balcony above a small brook passing a little bit deeper underneath. My playpen has been there, I know it for sure. It feels simply all perfect.

It took me the whole afternoon, staying and sitting in the next door temple to deal with this feeling. The feeling of coming home.

Not so much associated only with that specific house, so I discovered. The culture, the environment, the atmosphere, the air, the smile of people, sincerity, being yourself.  An at the same time at home within yourself. Feeling warm, opening up, and automatically in a position of  sharing.
The year 2000 is the trigger for me to South Asia. A trigger, again and again, periodically reminds me of the real feeling for me of feeling home. Perhaps maybe ever forever ... "

And there you are. Now already for three years. Never thought about the idea that actually pretty shortly after my book came out that signal, my traffic accident because of a blackout driving in the Westerschelde tunnel, brought me finally back home.

The household / goodies from the truck even more gave me back my real feeling of being home. It gave me insight in that what's going on with and in me. An discovery journey in deeper and deeper coming home into myself.

An experience.

The art of letting go. The practice of clearing and cleansing body and mind.

For the first time in my life finally I acknowledged. Result? A magnificent experience.

Isn´t it quite normal to spring-clean your house? Getting rid of dust, dirt, waste and useless things. Clean windows and sometimes even redecorate?
I remember the spring-clean in our family house as a young boy. It created space to see, to breathe and to open up again. Supporting us to live a good, healthy life. It really made us all happy. My mother who - I want to be honest - did most of the job, afterwards always called it; “Rewarding work”.

But what about ourselves, our own inner temple? Do you clear and clean yourself, your own private temple you live in, once in a while? OK we try to keep our body fit, maybe go to the gym once in a while and eat healthy but… isn’t there more we can do to be or stay healthy?
And what about your mind? The real heart, the computer and manager of your body? Think about all the ‘waist’ we throw into our mind and things we are still suffering about from the past. Most of the time we do not spend much time on cleaning and freeing the mind until… it’s too late.

Last week my employer offered me the opportunity to do a detox cleansing fast program. I am already working in a part of this program but never did it myself. It's all about clearing and cleaning, well let's just say detoxifying, your inner temple. I can tell you; a ‘spicy’ cleaning you really need to take time for to do it.

Detoxifying the body and by meditation and life-coaching, also creating space in, and detoxify the mind. A unique way and combination of the real art of letting go.

The results? Maybe the picture on the right gives you an idea. What started as the picture on top of this blog (full and still holding the 'roof') feels now like this. Clear, freer, lighter and with some more space, in body and mind.

After joining you feel like your car has been given a total makeover and looks like new inside and out. And putting the first fuel in again is a boost. Your head is feeling clear and with empty space, you're more alert, you can deal with the world in a different way, your skin feels soft, you feel actually you are rejuvenated.

And it’s easy to go on with this. I do not mean with the inner cleaning process, but you learn to be the sustainable gatekeeper of what comes into your body and mind. In short, it makes you feel healthy, feeling fit, happy, wise and free.

Let go! Detox your body and mind? Rewarding work!

How to be (more) successful? What a question…? It can be so simple.

Last week, from a colleague who is living in China, I got a Facebook message with a recommendation to read an article with the name: “Nine Things You Need To Stop Doing If You Want To Be Successful.” After reading the article, with a smile, I made the comment to her: “A lot of stopping. I miss: Start Living.”

The word successful took my mind for a while. What is being successful, and in relation to this message, why do I have to stop doing things to reach it?

For me the word ‘successful’ has some same things as the word ‘beautiful’. You never can find the right description and you cannot touch it. What beautiful is for you, for somebody else can be unnatural, out of style, or even disgusting. Being beautiful has no end. There is always a ´more beautiful´ and, if not, we just create the desire to get it by photo-shopping.

With the word ‘success’ it’s a little bit the same. You always can reach more. There is no end. Thousands of people have the same degree as you. Millions have a higher amount of money on their bank account, a nicer/bigger car, or a bigger or more luxury house. But is this being successful?
Other people laugh about what success is for you. Even when you would win an Olympic medal in gold, within a couple of years somebody else takes over this place. Thinking of reaching/having success always and immediately is an invitation, for yourself or somebody else, to go beyond. In this way you never can reach success and when we feel we reached it, nearly always it is temporary.
Does success really exist or do we just imagine it as a kind of goal and make ourselves a little bit mad with it?

The English version of Wikipedia offers for the word Success; ‘Attainment of higher social status’, ‘The opposite of failure”. Reading this I got the feeling of competition, fight, and sometimes – using other ones backs - things even worse. It can be a kind of reaching the (temporary) first place and showing that you are (temporary) the best.

It’s this competition world in which we grow up. Our system is injected with it. We have to reach goals to be successful. Actually every single person has a goal of unique superiority. Sometimes out of early dissapointments changing in inferiority.
In The Netherlands we have a so called Cito-test to ‘help’ schools, children at the end of the primary school, and their parents, to take the next step in education. When this students, after growing up and having a job for several years, as adults look back and check what really was the impact of this test in their ‘success´ in life a lot of times you find different results. Sometimes even the opposite than expected (Inferiority changed in superiority).

Wanting to be successful helps us to make steps forward, to grow, to discover and that´s great as long as it’s a kind of playful game instead of a struggle or fight to get it. And when we reach our longing goal take a little while to celebrate. Most of the time, even before we get there, a new goal is already longing. A never ending story. Sometimes a vicious circle of running instead of enjoying. So what about this first goal we reached? What did we learn? Did it make us happy and if so, for what period of time? Was it really worth spending a part of our life time on it?

There is another way and perspective to look to being successful as well. It does not need shiny cars, no higher status, a big house, and it is not even necessary to stop with doing nine things. It’s immediately working in a sustainable way. It’s called … GET A LIFE!

Do the things you are passionate about, live your talents and gifts, enjoy the small things in life even more, enjoy life, smile. I am grateful to live in a surrounding on a daily base filled and full of smiles and positive energy.
When my mother should read my story I think she should add the sentence: “Be and feel satisfied and sometimes just sacrifice. Humility is not a bad thing.”

A maybe different and ‘small’ world of success at first sight. At the end it will infect the big world around in a very positive way.
And competition or struggle? For what? What are these words? Just laugh and ‘enrich’ yourself (this is not an egoistic thing) with the success of living. Do not support the row of people who only were running for success and, at the end, got regrets about their already past life time. Let your life be your career, there will be no desire left.

Being successful only is a label the outside world gives you as an temporary ‘award’. A label often filled with underlying envy. A direct call to compete. A call to endlessly try to accomplish others losing sight of the shores of living. There is no way to sustainable reach it. It does not exist unless you are God.

Am I successful? What a question...? I feel, step by step, this word is leaving my vocabulary because I try to be more and more aware of life and enjoy the only goal in it, living.

You have a choice. Get a life. It’s simple. Success is guaranteed!

Reap what you are. Imperfection does not exist.

Last Wednesday I guided the weekly class of mindful communication. One of our guests who is doing a health program is reading a book with the title; “The gifts of imperfection”. During the class we gave attention to this word “imperfection” and it’s meaning.

We found that imperfection does not exist. It is only a thought that makes you suffer. A thought “offered” to you by your surrounding world. What other people think about it and sometimes how they use their verbal action in relation to it. The ‘news’ they spread about this in their eyes imperfection.
For me a great phenomenon is the Australian guy Nick Vujicic, the man without arms and legs. He not only tells but also shows that people are unique and wonderful the way they are. “I do not believe in mistakes. And when the world says you are not good enough… ask a second opinion.”

In the mean time the business world, the world of marketing, the world of ego and jealousy tell us imperfection exist. And business and marketing offer you the solution to solve the imperfection and suffering about it. You only have to pay for the temporary ‘solutions’.

Also here in Asia I work with wonderful and beautiful people. I start my classes most of the time very early in the morning. When I visit the office, after this morning class, most of the time the first staff members arrive at work. First thing they do is their make-up. No pictures allowed, sometimes - in a playful way – a kind of hide and seek till they are ready to ‘show up’. In my opinion – but who am I – a lot of times they look even better and much more natural in the in their opinion “imperfect” way than with (lots of) make-up. What is there to hide?

And it is exactly the same with the things we do in life. We try to be perfect in the eyes, we think, other people look at us. A lot of times we do - or try to do - things we do not like doing and think we serve the world we live in. We forget our greatest gift in life, that we are perfect already. And doing things that are actually, out of your heart and uniqueness, your things are not serving you as well as the world around you in the best and natural way. You are forcing, consuming lots of energy and hurting yourself trying to be a ‘perfect’ person in the eyes of others, forgetting you sustainably already are perfect (and you do not have to pay extra).

The Buddha was inspired by nature. And again nature shows us how it works. The area where I live in produces lots of species of all different fruits and herbs. The mango season just started. Nice fresh desserts (mango with sticky rice) are being served again.

Ever thought about an apple tree that reaps mangos? Or a leeches fruit tree that harvest cherries? Or the banana herb that offers you tomatoes? I think there is no other word than being aware of imperfection when this should happen.

Nature shows us how it works, with trees, with animals, etc.. It shows us the seasons and one of the seasons is to harvest.

Just reap what YOU are and bask in your perfection to serve yourself and the world around in the best way.

Time is everything… every minute you are one step closer to the end.

Above the door of the house in Thailand I live in I wrote the text; “The clock won’t find you here.”
It is an invitation to people who want to work with me that there is time and attention for them. More and more I discover the basic need of people for attention and breathing. Beside that they need time to work on realizing their goals and dreams and to try to make sure the next thing goes right for them. Trying to keep grip on life.

Being a CEO of the Safety Region Zeeland in The Netherlands, from my colleague a couple of years ago I got a book with the title; “Time is everything…”. A merely and inspiring book that, whenever I have the chance, I just open at a random page. Every time again it shows new insights. We even organize a program here about this theme.

Time really is everything. Most of the time we do not even realize it. Yes, sometimes and only for a short while, when some of our friends or colleagues abruptly passes away. Or if we, or one of our love ones get a sad message of for instance health. Immediately life changes and things in life get another meaning. Priorities change, thoughts change. What would you do if you know you only have to live for one more week?

In the Thai village I live - and I think everywhere here at the countryside - time has another meaning. This meaning has everything to do with the status death has in this culture. It’s being seen as a normal and accepted part of life. A mark for an end but directly also for a new beginning to celebrate. A kind of fresh start. Last week, during a contemplation about ‘death’, it made me even more clear.

No person or situation in life could ever teach you as much as death has to teach you it said. Death show you the insignificance of the things that you cling on, it takes them all away in a split second. There is no difference between poor or rich, man or woman, status or position, races or whatever else. Death makes us all the same.

What can we learn from death? The question was raised how long you are going to wait to live life the fullest? How long do you wait till death becomes your teacher?  Why wait until everything is taken from you before you learn to dig down deep inside yourself to reach your highest talents and potential and live life in a (even more) valuable way? If with one final out-breath all of this can change, why bothering about so many not really valuable issues now and ‘spoil’ time of life? Don’t you want to live before death comes? A few things I wrote down:

  • There is something in us that sometimes won’t let us live and enjoy our lives. It is so busy trying to make sure our future will be fine that we can’t just be in the here and now and live life.
  • We are months or sometimes even years ahead of ourselves. Because of this we are not even aware of the present moment and do not enjoy and-or celebrate what we already reached in life.
  • If you live life fully, you won´t have any last wishes. You will have lived them every moment.
  • If you make your final week to live the most important week, ask yourself what did you do with the rest of life-time. Did you waste it?
  • The beauty is, you do not have to change life; You just have to change how you live life.
  • It’s not what you are doing; it’s how much of you is doing it (awareness of enjoying life).
  • Life itself is your career, not the other way around.
  • Your interaction with life is your most meaningful relationship.
  • What actually gives life meaning is the willingness – and the courage - to experience life’s events.
  • Life is not something you get; it’s something you experience.
  • Life exists with or without you.  You are not living life; you’re living your thoughts.
  • Start using every day to let go of that scared part of you that won’t let you live life fully.
What are you doing with life? That’s what death asks you. Don’t get uptight about it. Instead, let this knowledge help you to live every moment of your life fully, because every moment matters. Feel invited to live with that level of awareness and enjoy life maybe even more.

We are bursting with energy but block it ourselves

A wonderful experience I got this week. Happy to share. Just give it a try and encounter.

Sometimes you feel very sad. No lust at all, feeling down or tired, maybe even a little bit depressed.
To be honest, you are not at all ‘shining’. Strange because yesterday, last week, last month or (even worse) last year you felt totally well energetic and sparkling. What went wrong?

Everything that happens outside in the physical world requires energy. To move or respond with our body we need our muscles. And our muscles need fuel, food, to move. For things happening in the inside world, we also need energy but it’s from a different kind and ... endless.

Every day we have to deal with lots of inner energy draining. To give you some examples; generating and controlling (because of told social behaviour) emotions, creating thoughts, every thought that passes through our mind, our suffering, disciplining powerful inner drives, all require a tremendous expenditure of energy.
Did you ever ask yourself where this energy comes from? Why this energy is available at one moment and is nowhere to find another time. To take something to eat, although we think, most of the time does not help. And when you are really honest to yourself you already know that taking a cup of coffee, a cigarette or a glass of beer or wine do not support you with what you actual need... Long lasting inner energy. You take this because you made it a routine but actually it’s all fake.

When you turn things around and you investigate a situation of great enthusiasm, motivation or maybe even just in love, what you discover is a bursting amount of energy and… you do not even want to eat.

Exploring this can make you aware that there is a form of ‘free’ available inner energy. Some force to support us and has nothing to do with calories or Joules. An energy that is available in a split second. The feeling of being or falling in love, when love rushes up into your heart, can be a mirror to understand and touch this energy. When you are in a sad mood already for a while and, surprisingly, the doorbell rings and your new lover is standing in front of you with a big smile and a bunch of flowers when you open the door. The sad feeling immediately is gone. You are not tired anymore, you are on the other hand creative, full of energy, motivated, your body language totally changed and you do not even feel the need to go for a sleep till the next morning when you, second surprise, together experience the sunrise.
How do you do? Do you open an energy tap somewhere? And if so, where did you find this tap and is it actually possible to manage this tap so the energy is always there for you? Because… this feels good!

Last week I learned there is a kind of ‘tap’ and you are the only one who can operate but... we are not aware of this possibility. There is a never ending inner energy source that does not need energy/food for itself. How to handle? Maybe it sounds strange and very simple but the way to make this energy available for you in a sustainable and lasting way is to NOT close the tap. So do not block it.

Frans, are you still connected with the earth? Do you believe this?

Yep! For me it is even more than an inner believe. It is a way of training, learning by doing but it’s getting better and better. This eastern World I am part of is full of this kind of, in my opinion, wonderful dis-coveries. And when I talk about discoveries the meaning is that it was already there for me/for us the only thing you have to do is to take off the cover.

In ancient Chinese medicine it is called Chi, the yoga practitioners here at our energetic Thai wellness centre call it Shakti, in the Western world we call it Spirit. Call it anything you want. This unlimited high energy inside of you has to do with our Chakras. The main energy centre of all is the hearth chakra. You can open or close your heart. Closing most of the time is our habit. Keeping it closed can make us sick. And just like any other habit, it can be broken.

To train your heart to be open is opening the tap or the door to enrich yourself with endless free and supporting energy. At the same time you make the connection with the world around. This is what changes your body language. You are much more available, much more aware, energetic and enjoy life. You are in flow.
All your personal history, memories, emotions/sensations out of the past, your suffering are sources to close the tap/the door. You are supporting nobody with this, not even yourself. What you actually do is responding to feelings of inner fear. So ask yourself who is ruling your life? Are you the master of your life or your fear or the things you are suffering about? Be the observer, open your heart.
Think about the idea that only a certain smell bringing up a great remembering, at once, can be the trigger to open the door and ignites this inner power immediately. So you are really able to operate, to manage this energy. How to do? Just easy, do not block it. So open the door and do not close it again.

As the Buddha said... Do not believe! Find out and surprise yourself.

Your environment will recognize this shining energy of you and already only your own higher energetic feeling can make a big positive change in how you experience your day.

Tantra… encounter the jewels of new life energy

A couple of years ago one of our guests became very emotional doing, bare feet, a walking exercise in soft grass at our place. At home he was not allowed to walk bare feet. Without even thinking about this first, walking in the soft grass wasn’t just only a sensation for him. It filled up his whole being. He felt totally released by expanding his awareness when the grass massaged his feet and his feet massaged the grass. The connection with the earth. It was a kind of understanding the body, mind and soul connection again. A different energy.

At that time he took a period time, doing a Villa-Asia program, to shake up his live a bit. A personal ‘pit-stop’. Taking a road for himself less travelled and moved beyond the confines of his well known comfort zone at home. Inviting him to work on personal mastery and to explore and realize his true potential.
And without even knowing or adapting on the experience, his unconscious mind immediately woke up to give him this, conscious, wake-up call. A deep inner happy feeling of aliveness, soaking up life.
Back home he discussed, changed the situation and felt much more connected / rooted and happier. Where an unsuspected pleasant experience can be able of…

Most of us live at such a frenetic pace that the quality of awareness has eroded. Internal and external influences - responsible for change of lifestyle, ‘protection’ barriers, body veils and armouring - make things even worse. Walking around as a kind of Russian Matryoshka doll. And though we seek in this covers or “garments” the freedom of privacy and safety, most of the time they work deep inside as a personal harness and a chain. Covering the possibility to listen to our deep inner personal requests.

How to soak up life again? This brings me to Tantra. And please, reading this blog, understand Tantra beyond the stereotype “concept” that Tantra just is about sex. Buddhist tantra most of the time have nothing to do with sexual practices. They are a divine means to enlightenment through discovering the unique identity. So Tantra offers different layers/options some of them as we offer in our periodic international one week ‘clothes-on’ Tantra journey workshop in Northern Thailand.

The word Tantra comes from the ancient Sanskrit words tanoti (which means “to expand”) and travati (which means “liberation”). This implies that you can be liberated by expanding your consciousness, your quality of awareness.

It is an adventurous journey of again discovering your senses, energy and sensations as they are meant to be. Taking steps on the path from programmed thinking to a kaleidoscope of new manifestations of intuitively feeling. An awakening of senses (and what they are able to provoke) and energy. An interweaving of the energies of many levels of consciousness from the ordinary to the most intense. A (spiritual) path for integrating body, mind and soul connection.
Exploring this can be a revelation called fully living (again). Bringing greater sense of aliveness to your existence.

There still are ways to really ‘connect’ in a more and more disconnecting world. You only have to take a pit-stop and start with yourself. Tantra is one of the ways to encounter a free life in real connection.

Overriding the harness of the known, allowing what is possible, fearless entering a field of endless possibilities... That passes what the head can contain. The head (the mind) is mostly focused on problems and on solving them. Paddling, pondering and all sorts of intricacies.

If you have the courage to pass it and to surf on new free and light life energy ... then there will be new life in the brewery.

In connection with everything what is possible it rains jewels.

The inspiration of a mountain

I remember my dad as always inspired by mountains. During the summer holidays we often went to a place, Oud Valkenburg - part of Schin op Geul municipality- in the south part of The Netherlands. He felt home walking alone daily for a couple of hours in the forest and on the top of the hills. When I was older, together with him, I went to Austria, his favorite country because of again… the mountains.

Living here in Thailand already for a while, every day I work and live with nature. Nature for me is inspiring, a new bond. And, learning more about Buddhism, also the Buddha got a lot of his teachings out of the connection with nature. The only thing was that he took his time to watch, feel, smell, taste and hear nature and to be aware of the energy of nature. When you are inspired by nature, nature is an easy example and mirror of how to live life.

With some guests we took the time to enjoy a mountain / hill (see the picture) and waited till inspiration touched us. A wonderful experience I want to share with the help of a so called ‘Dhama talk’ we used.

We mentioned that mountains are still, stead-fast and durable. They are solid and reliable.

From moment to moment mountains are expressing through nature. They are connected with the earth. They are stable. They are going on with lives. They are an expression of nature marching on. And also they are from one day to the next continuing the presence. And from one season to the next their appearance changes in the same way that the appearance of somebody taking one step after another is changing. The clouds which role over the mountain tops interact in harmony. Just like the footsteps when we walk on the path.

Mountains are present in the landscape. They accept everything. Mountains don’t hide when snow and ice comes. When it rains or when the baking sun beats down. And when people trample all over them, or drop litter on them, the mountain just accepts that. This does not say you do not have to pay respect to nature. But the mountain, without complaint, accepts life completely as it is.

We got the in-sight for ourselves; Don’t try and hide from the truth of situations. Respond appropriately. Accept the fact that you are free to do whatever is right and good. And you should be fearless in doing of what is right or good. Just as a mountain is fearless. Become mountains for each other. Be solid, pleasant, trusted and reliable for each other.

And yes. There are always two sights. There is light and dark in all things. Mountains are not all fluffy. They are not all love and light. There can be dangerous places. There can be avalanches and mud slides and temperatures going very low. And in a way it’s the same with life too. Life can have dangers. And we need to respect that fact.

So, maybe, next time you see a mountain or hill… take some time to stand still and be inspired.
